CHURCH OF S.STEFANO ROTONDO

The church was founded in the 5th century by Pope Simplicio (468-483) and it represents the oldest example of Roman Church with centralized plan and for architectural and artistic features is one of the greatest monuments of the city. Originally it was organized with a large circular structure with two concentric corridors divided by colonnades that develop around a central corridor. Today the arches of the ambulatory are walled.

STATE OF CONSERVATION

The many technical problems such as the lack of floors, frescoed interior surfaces, gaps of the covering and plants, etc. imposed the protection institution to start a preliminary survey design that was of a high standard and that allowed to represent the plan and all the surfaces.

The Project

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PROJECT

The project has identified in the first instance a complete and detailed topographic planimetric survey. Later we have planned to upholster the surfaces with Digital Photo mosaics in order to record the continuity of the surfaces: the so obtained images were then straightened with sophisticated and subsequently digitized software emphasizing the themes required by the customer. Keeping in mind that the circular shape of the system required special and difficult steps to make surveyable and representable the curved surfaces. The final product of photo maps was an orthogonal projection obtained by an homological transformation that represents a foreshortening plane, the pictures, in orthogonal projection, the photo plan. In addition to plans at all levels and to the most significant sections, 42 projection plans on inner surfaces and on the chapel of the apse, 7 on the chapel of the altar, 9 on altars have been obtained. On the external surfaces of the circle 1, 34 projection plans have been realized and 14 on the circle 2.
